David Peters Awarded ISCD Medal of Honour

The award recognises David’s tireless contribution and passion to the deaf sports movement, Nationally and Internationally, over thirty years. The purposes of the Medal of Honour is to embody the spirit of the ICSD Constitution and equality through sports.

In addition to the honour above David was also selected as one of the six Torch Bearers at the Deaflympic Games Opening Ceremony where he handed over the torch to 2008 Deaf Sportswoman of the Year, Trude Raad from Norway.

The two honours listed above are a tremendous honour for David and Deaf Sports Australia congratulates him on such a fantastic achievement. Anyone who has met David will be aware of the passion, pride, commitment and good humour that he displays in all his roles.

In other news at the ICSD congress, over 72 countries participated at the recent ISCD Congress where members voted to select the city of Vancouver, Canada to host the 2015 Winter Deaflympic Games.

Members were also given the opportunity to be briefed on the two candidate cities bidding for the 2017 Summer Deaflympic Games who were Barcelona, Spain and Seoul, Korea.

During the course of the ISCD Congress the changing of the guard occurred with Dr Donalda Ammons withdrawing her nomination for the ICSD Presidency, thus stepping down from ICSD. As a result, Craig Crowley (UK) was elected new ICSD President whilst David Lanesman (Israel) was elected as ICSD Vice President, Youth and Jossef Willmerdinger (Germany) was elected as ICSD Vice President, Sport.

Eight new countries joined the ICSD family and they are Iraq, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Yemen, Bosnia-Hertzegova, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Ivory Coast.

The ISCD Congress also agreed that the Handball & Water Polo disciplines will not be part of the Sports Program for the 2013 Deaflympic Games due to not fielding a minimum of 12 teamss at three consecutive Games (as per Deaflympic Games regulations).
